Description
This delightful book, written by Michael Rosen and illustrated by Helen Oxenbury, has been charming children for 30 years, and it is not hard to see why.
The refrain: ‘We’re going on a bear hunt, We’re going to catch a big one,’ has an excellent rhythm to it – a wonderful example of scansion done just right – and positively invites everyone to join in.
This is a wonderful way to stimulate the imagination thanks to its easy to understand story. The children are going on a bear hunt, but they come up against obstacles (long grass, a river, thick oozy mud) and realising that they ‘can’t go over it, can’t go under it, oh no! we’ll have to go through it’ leads to the most fun part: the swishy-swashy, splashy-sploshy, squelch-squerch sound effects.
Oxenbury’s illustrations capture the joy of childhood and the fun there is in exploring and getting to grips with nature, so this book is the perfect addition to any home. It is a great book for bedtime: with lots of sploshing and squelching and all the excellent and messy noises the book describes, it gets little imaginations fired up with the idea of going on an adventure – but in dreamland rather than real life!
